Expanding railways in Australia beckon

Now that the autumn is approaching, the nights drawing in and the task of scraping ice from the car soon to become a daily chore, you may think there is something else out there.

Well, if you are an electrical, OHL or signalling engineer at almost all levels then read on.

Australia
A country where a project isn’t big unless it is costing (pounds) 5Bn. Where the outdoor life is the norm. Where the Christmas holiday can be enjoyed in the pool in your own back garden.

Where the future economic stability is the ground you walk on. Where new railways are measured in the hundreds of kilometres and where delays to freight trains are measured in millions of dollars.

Big and diverse
Many people don’t realise the variety of life in Australia. From cosmopolitan Sydney to the desert in the centre, to the beautiful landscape of the Pilberra in Western Australia. Add to this the rain forests of northern Queensland and the fantastic wine areas in the south of the country and you can begin to understand just how big and diverse the country is.

The rail network is just as diverse. From two car rural services to interstate luxury trains to the 2 mile long, 30,000 ton ore trains, to the metro services in big cities – the railway network is as varied as the country.

O’Donnell Griffin Rail
And the leading railway electrical engineering company in Australia is O’Donnell Griffin Rail, who have been delivering solutions and services to the Australian market for over 100 years.

The opportunities that they have are, as you would expect, as varied as the country. At this time, ODG Rail, as they are generally known as, are working in most of the States.

In New South Wales they are part of a team forming the Novorail alliance. This major improvement to the rail system in NSW is a project that is spending $1Bn over 5 years. And that is actual spend – not just potential.

The South Improvement Alliance of which ODG Rail is once again an alliance partner is a $1Bn freight line upgrade from Sydney to Melbourne, or, if you want some sun, how about the recently awarded RGP5 project. Simply put, take a 300km long single track with passing loops and make it double track. In 18 months.

A fantastic lifestyle
For ODG Rail, however, it is what they are good at. They recently completed the building of a new commuter railway in Perth which was a brand new line down the middle of a freeway, electrified at 25kv and with works in a new tunnel under the centre of Perth.

O’Donnell Griffin Rail are also involved with the electrication upgrade in the Greater Wellington area (capital city of New Zealand). A major refurbishment of the OHL system supporting the city of Wellington and outer regions was awarded to ODG Rail and the opportunities there are just as exciting.

Exciting and varied work, a fantastic lifestyle, great family opportunities, friendly people and beautiful weather. Just think about it when you are scraping the ice off your car. Or perhaps you should come and talk to us in London next month?
