Oxford station is to receive an additional platform as part of a £10m scheme by Network Rail and Oxfordshire County Council. The new bay platform, to be built on part of the station’s long stay car park, will reduce the need for commuter trains from London to shunt out of the station and across to another platform in order to return south.

In addition a new covered footbridge will be constructed to link the new platform with existing station buildings. This will replace the existing footbridge that connects the station with the car park.

It is envisaged that the new platform will be ready for use in 2011.
