The process of awarding a contract to construct the rail link to the Borders has commenced.
Transport Scotland, the Scottish Government agency in charge of the scheme, has submitted a notice for construction for publication in the Official Journal of European Union.
The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change, Stewart Stevenson said: “We’re determined to deliver this project for people throughout Midlothian and the Scottish Borders and I’m delighted that we’re on track to open up those regions to rail passengers again for the first time in over forty years.”
It is anticipated that the construction contract for the, at 2013 projected prices, £200-£230m design and build elements of the work will be awarded in autumn 2011.
The railway will provide a fast and efficient rail link connecting communities in the Scottish Borders and Midlothian to Edinburgh, who currently have no direct access to a railway line.
