LRTA Officers’ Conference supports Edinburgh Trams

The officers of the Light Rail Transit Association (LRTA) at their conference in Manchester today (Saturday 27 March 2010) reaffirmed their support for the Edinburgh Tram Project.

The LRTA is firmly of the view that, regardless of the current contractual disputes, Scotland’s Capital City needs the social, economic and environmental benefits that this project will bring. The same benefits that modern light rail has already brought to hundreds of other cities around the world.

As supporter and close observer of the Edinburgh Tram Project, the LRTA takes no satisfaction from the current lack of progress and urges all sides to work together to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

The LRTA encourages the City’s leaders, businesses and residents to remain fully behind the project and look to the ultimate goal of a fully integrated public transport system combining bus, tram and train.

As has always been found elsewhere, once the trams are running all the current difficulties will quickly be forgotten and the LRTA looks forward to celebrating another milestone in Edinburgh’s proud public transport history when the first new tram takes to the streets.
