Deutsche Bahn agrees terms to acquire Arriva

Deutsche Bahn has, after offering £7.75 a share, announced that it has agreed terms to acquire Arriva in a deal worth £1.59bn.

This move will result in the CrossCountry and Arriva Trains Wales rail franchises coming under DB control. Deutsche Bahn already own Chiltern Railways and has stakes in both Wrexham and Shropshire and London Overground as well as operating the Tyneside Metro and owning the UK’s biggest rail freight company, formally known as EWS, that also operates the Royal train.

The takeover by DB is subject to approval by competition authorities, but the transport giant is not expecting any opposition to the deal that will also see it operate a large proportion of the UK’s buses.

The Royal train, hauled by dedicated Royal locomotive 67005 Queen's Messenger, arrives at Kidderminster. Picture: www.upmain.com
