South West Trains invest £2.2m in regenerative braking
South West Trains is to invest £2.2m in fitting 202 of its 334 trains with regenerative braking systems as part of the Stagecoach Group’s five year carbon reduction plan.
The first 2 class 458s have already had the equipment installed and the rest of the 30 strong fleet will follow by the end of this May.
The regenerative braking software, which allows electricity to be returned to the third rail system, will then be fitted to the Desiro fleet.
This project, which is being carried out in partnership with Network Rail, Alstom and Siemens, will save at least 15 million kWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power 3,500 homes for a whole year.
