Loughborough station is to undergo a £7m package of improvements that will see its 2 main platforms doubled in length to 235m, enough to accommodate a 10 car Meridian, and step free access to all its platforms in time for Team GB”s pre-2012 Olympic training at the nearby university.

Other improvements include new station canopies, these should be completed by October this year, renewed CCTV, cycle parking, customer toilets, refurbished waiting rooms and ticket office along with updated customer information screens.

The works are scheduled for completion by January 2012 and, by coincidence, the nearby Great Central Railway’s canopy at Loughborough Station is undergoing a major refurbishment.

Does this mean car parking charges will go up. They are currently extortionate and making free parking would encourage a lot more passengers to use the trains
