Tornado expected to return on 14th August
Following its recent failure, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust says that 60163 Tornado should return to the mainline on August 14th.
As a precautionary measure over 150 stays, out of a total of more than 2,000, have been removed from the firebox. Although no broken stays were discovered, 5 have been found to have minute cracks. Staff from DB Meiningen are at Hither Green depot replacing the removed stays.
Metalurgical analysis has shown that the minute cracks have been caused by fatigue, commensurate with the amount of work the boiler has done so far.
The August 14th trip will see 60163 work a King’s Cross to York charter.
