Mumbai Suburban Railway System go ahead with World Bank’s Assistance
The World Bank has approved a loan of $430 million to Indian Railways for financing the Mumbai Urban Transport Project – II (MUTP II).
Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa said that the project comprises various components. These include laying tracks between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal and Kurla, besides those between Thane and Diva and Mumbai Central and Borivali.
In detail the MUTP II Project consists of the following works:
- 5th & 6th Lines CSTM-Kurla.
- 5th & 6th Lines Thane-Diva.
- 6th Line Mumbai Central-Borivali.
- Extension of Harbour Line from Andheri to Goregaon.
- DC to AC Conversion.
- EMU procurement and manufacture.
- Maintenance facilities for EMUs.
- Stabling Lines for EMUs.
- Technical studies and institutional strengthening studies.
- Resettlement and rehabilitation of project affected households
- Station improvement & trespassing control.
The project is expected to be completed by 2014-15.
The World Bank loan will be used to finance procurement of electrics for manufacture of EMU rakes, part funding of DC to AC conversion on Central Railway, technical studies and institutional strengthening studies. The other works mentioned above are also part of MUTP II, but they will be funded by Ministry of Railways and Government of Maharashtra.
