Solution sought for mobile coverage

London mayor Boris Johnson is in talks with mobile telephone operators in an effort to provide mobile telephone coverage on the underground in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Funding for the project would have to be provided by mobile operators, without any financial support from taxpayers.

Although technically possible, up to now the projected cost of installing mobile telephone equipment on the underground has been very expensive. It is hoped that a solution can be found that is both technically and commercially acceptable.
