RailStaff Awards Winners 2010

Iain Coucher, chief executive of Network Rail, in one of his last speeches before leaving the company next Friday praised the railway staff who do the work and deliver the railway. Speaking at the RailStaff Awards Iain said, ‘I stand in front of you in unqualified awe of you and what you do.’ Speaking without notes Coucher went on, ‘I am absolutely blown away by some of the things I have seen here and read about what you have done. You are all heroes.’ Pete Waterman, who hosted the evening, paid tribute to Iain Coucher as a breath of fresh air and a real door opener. ‘Enjoy your retirement, Iain, I know it won’t be for long,’ Pete said.

The RailStaff Awards, now in its fourth year, celebrates the courage and heroism of the thousands of working people who deliver Britain’s railways every day.  Awards include Train Driver of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Awards and Rail Team of the Year. In all there are 14 categories. Nominations flood in from all across the industry, from the Scottish Highlands to traction depots in north London and rail bases in Derby, Cardiff and Swindon.

Edward Welsh, director of corporate affairs at the Association of Train Operating Companies,  ATOC, said, ‘The great strength of the rail industry is its people.’ He paid tribute to the industry which is expanding rapidly and desperately needs more investment and acknowledged the set backs caused by the recession. However he went on, ‘Through the hard work and dedication of railway staff we will get through this together, as a family, as one.’

The RailStaff Awards is organised by the Rail Media Group, publishers of RailStaff, the leading industry newspaper specialising in good news stories about the railways and the people who work on them. RMG also publishes the rail engineer magazine taking an in-depth look at railway engineering developments. www.railwaypeople.com is a specialist rail recruitment web site also run by RMG. The next RailStaff Awards will be on 8th October 2011 at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham.

Over 500 railway staff and their families attended the RailStaff Awards at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham. Pete Waterman hosted the evening which opened with brief speeches of welcome by Edward Welsh, director of corporate affairs at the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), and Iain Coucher, chief executive of Network Rail. ATOC and Network Rail are Associate Sponsors of the RailStaff Awards. After dinner comedian Alun Cochrane delighted the proceedings. Then, after the actual awards, railway staff danced the night away to live band, Fully FunKtional. ‘It was a great night out, a family get together and a celebration as well as a brilliant party,’ says Gemma King, organiser of the evening and manager of the RailStaff Awards.
